Things To Do In A Depression

Bad times are riding an express train, and for many they’re already here. Unemployment is rapidly rising, inflation is just around that next curve and yet the availability of money is steadily diminishing as jobs become scarcer and wages decrease. Wages are decreasing because the demand for jobs is becoming greater than the supply and employers can get more for less… and they know it.

Obamas Socialist Welfare State will only make things worse because he’s going to take from the rich and give to the poor. It happens to be the rich who provide jobs in this country, not the poor, and the rich won’t stand for it. The rich are already planning their exodus from American investment and by the time his tax plan goes into action, most of the rich will have done so ahead of him.

So you can imagine without effort why unemployment is rapidly rising.

Even if you have a secure job now that you’re able to keep, a lot of people around you won’t be so fortunate. So NOW…

is a good time to look carefully at your friends and acquaintances. Which of them are most likely to be camping on your doorstep begging to stay on your couch and eat from your table? You need to weed out the slackers and the deadwood now, not later.

Do any of your friends smoke dope or do an occasional line? Get drunk on Saturday nights? Those are the ones most likely to resort to theft to feed themselves when things get tough for them, and your party friends are the first ones you need to cut off contact with and not let into your home anymore.

But let’s say that you’re one of the party friends, yourself, and one of the first your employer lets go. What should you do? Well, now is a good time to stop partying and get serious, don’t you think? Start searching for a place where you’d be welcome in hard times, where you could pitch in and help with the chores, and be valued. There’s going to be a glut on the market of non-valued people soon, so you’d better start making yourself valued, right now. It’s time to mend those fences.

Then there’s always the military if you fit into the age and physical condition categories. You get 3 hots and a cot, get into good physical condition and even learn new trades. The downside is that you may get shot up and/or killed in a conflict, but things aren’t going to be all that nice at home, either, and at least you’ll be clothed and fed.

Being able to repair things is a great survival skill. Anything. Washers and dryers, appliances, things made of wood or plastic, car engines, broken tools, whatever. People aren’t going to have the money to buy things to replace what breaks down, so if you can fix it, you eat for another day. So have a good supply of tools on hand if you’re one of those mechanical types, along with all the nails, screws and etcetera that you can stash away. You’ll be needing them.

Are you a skilled hunter living in or near an area with plentiful game? Meat can be traded for home-canned veggies and other items. Stock up on ammo.

There will be more posts on this as time goes by but this is a good starter. None of the things I’ve listed are hard to do, they all just require a little thought and effort. All of them can save your life and give you a better chance at getting through the bad days ahead.
