Mexican Tariffs Prove 3rd-World Stupidity

tariff list
This is a partial list of Mexican tariffs on our goods exported to Mexico.
Mexican officials said they hope the tariffs will spur business leaders to lobby Congress to restart the trucking program but they tried to avoid placing duties on commodities most vital to Mexican consumers. For instance, the tariffs target oilseeds but not wheat, which would have had a bigger impact on North Dakota, home to Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan, the trucking program’s biggest opponent on Capitol Hill.

“There was no way for us to be tougher” on his state without hurting Mexican consumers, a Mexican official said. Mr. Dorgan on Monday said he was outraged and has safety concerns with the trucking program.

Let’s look at that list of things that “avoids placing duties on commodities most vital” to Mexicans. I notice SHAMPOO, DEODORANTS AND TOOTHPASTE right off, ok, I can accept those as things Mexicans don’t use much. Christmas trees, oh yean, that’s a big one, definitly a daily dietary need. Mineral water, Products for manicures and pedicures, and Sunglasses, now those price increases are really going to hurt the Mexican buyers. I mean, all those drug cartel people who are the only ones who would by snob products like that, with all their money to throw around. Oh yeah, real pain there.

There will also be tariffs on Toilet Paper, something that Mexicans apparently don’t use much of.

Most of the rest of the stuff is food products that employ Mexicans by the hundred-thousand to help produce, so if Mexicans buy less of them because of the higher prices, other Mexicans are going to stop sending money home because they’re out of jobs.

Brilliant, eh? Great choices of things to attack, too, right? They’re increasing they’re own poverty not just there but here. Granted that this will indeed harm some of our manufacturers and farmers, however, the loss will not be all that great. Total sales to Mexico are about $3 billion a year, a tiny part of our total production, and the Mexican people will still buy most of it even at the increased prices.

Some Democrats are working to get legislation up to restart the trucking program and appease the Mexicans but with the strong opposition to it, this looks like a long row to hoe. Instead of worrying about this and trying to appease the stupid Mexican president, I think we should just sit back and watch as he cuts his own throat. How popular is this going to be with the people as they lose jobs here and pay more for goods there?

Stupidity isn’t confined to our own politicians. It’s globally endemic.

I don’t know beans about the trade relations obviously but I am geussing the US is a large part of Mexico’s trade. why not just retaliate with similar tariffs on Mexican goods? If I lived there I would certainly hate em.
