Coincidence: Right now, I’m watching an episode of “24″ — when things get ‘bottoms up’ and the situation shows itself as the oppositive we had think. WOW!

I have had three encounters with our version of the IRS, the first time I thought the inspector was fair but the other two were entirely dishonest. After the second visit, given a strict interpretation of the rules I probably owed them about £1000, although I had only acted in accordance with accountant’s advice. They just added up every expense in the accounts even those they knew were valid or already taxed by other means and £1000 became £8000. Had I accepted that they would have gone back 6 years and I’d have owed them £50000+interest. The third time I got a letter claiming all sorts of nonsense that was simply pure fantasy. It was easy enough to refute but why should I waste so many hours my time?

Would it be acceptable if a shop lifter fined £500 was than fined another £5000 because the court assumed, without any evdence, that he would probably be guilty of other offences? Of course not and yet this is the sort of thing that applies in tax law all the time.

Dealing with all the red tape in a small business, the deluge of bloody form filling, the hours spent on their crap overcomplicated filing systems, wondering if you will get another investigation for some simple error, often just make you feel it is not worth it. Most of our tax is wasted anyway. Blow a few more of the bastards up, no loss.
